🤖 AI Can Draft It. Not Sell It.

WELCOME

Hello👋, it’s Chris Fernandez, the CEO of Letter Operators.

Welcome to Smarter By Friday, where we unpack what’s actually happening in the newsletter world and what it means for your business.

I use AI to help draft this newsletter every week, so I am not here to say “Don't do it.” But I read a piece that pinned down the one thing AI still cannot do for a paid newsletter, and it explains why so many operators lose subscribers even when the writing looks perfectly fine.

The Part Of A Paid Newsletter AI Can't Write

There's a mistake paid newsletter operators make constantly that causes them to lose subscribers by the 3rd month.

Subscribers rarely quit because the writing got worse. So why do they leave? They quit because the newsletter stopped surprising them.

Most operators respond to soft renewal numbers by writing more. More editions, more length, more coverage of the same news. That instinct feels generous, but it's exactly backwards.

Why?

If a subscriber could Google what you just told them, that content should be free.

What earns a renewal is the interpretation only you can offer, plus a next step they can actually use.

This is where the AI conversation should get honest rather than dramatic.

AI can draft faster, clean up a clunky paragraph, or summarize a report in seconds. What it cannot do is form the opinion that makes a subscriber feel like they would have missed something without you.

I'm talking about lived experience, resonant opinions (maybe even controversial but honest ones), and real insight and tactics that you know were not created by anyone other than a real person.

That opinion comes from what you have actually watched happen in your own work, your own clients, your own mistakes.

A model trained on the internet has none of that history. It can imitate the shape of insight. It cannot originate it.

So the real mistake is not using AI to help you write. Plenty of profitable newsletters do.

The mistake is asking it to replace the one paragraph in every issue that only you could have written, the part where you tell a subscriber exactly what to do with what they just read.

TACTICAL TAKEAWAYS

• Before you publish, ask if a subscriber could have found this same information with a quick search, and if the answer is yes, move it to your free tier or cut it from the issue entirely.

• End every paid issue with one specific action a subscriber can take that day, a checklist, a script, or a single decision, not just a recap of what happened.

• Let AI handle your first draft or your research summary, but write the paragraph that carries your actual opinion yourself, since that is the one part subscribers are paying for.

Newsletter Ad Earnings Grew 30% Last Year

Marketplace data shows publisher earnings from newsletter ads grew 30% year over year while advertisers reached an 80% larger pool of subscribers, proof that sponsor budgets are still flowing into inboxes, not away from them.

Bots Are Eating Half Your Newsletter Clicks

An analysis found that more than half of all email clicks are not human, with about three-quarters of B2B clicks and roughly half of B2C clicks now coming from bots. The fix is to track real outcomes since even the best bot filters still miss about 20% of fake activity.

A 2026 AI Oversight Report found that 28% of users still have to actively supervise their AI tools to get reliable results, the exact kind of judgment a paid newsletter is supposed to sell.
